DISTAL ACCESS TECHNIQUE

There is a new approach for treating CTOs: the retrograde technique.

Distal access is a relatively recent innovation in vascular interventions. It is important for the treatment of patients with CTOs when the regular antegrade approach for crossing the occlusion is not possible.

Distal access can help mitigate risks, increase safety, and can be faster and easier than crossing from above. The following are a few benefits of the distal access technique:

  • Softer distal cap increases chances of crossing from below.1
  • Since collaterals are angled downward the guidewire does not slip into collaterals as easily.
  • There is a 98% technical success rate of crossing the lesion.2,3
  • 92% endoluminal recanalization.2
  • Recanalization time can range from 5–15 minutes.2
